TRC -- Victims Confronting Perpetrator
In this clip from Facing the Truth, with Bill Moyers, we watch an emotional dialogue between victims and the man who tortured them.
Transcript:
| "PERPETRATOR: On the Saturday I assaulted you… NARRATOR (MOYERS): No one could predict what would happen when victims confronted their torturers. VICTIM 1: [To perpetrator] Do you remember saying to me that you are able to treat me like an animal or like a human being and that how you treated me depended on whether I cooperated or not? PERPETRATOR: I can’t remember it correctly, sir, but I would concede I may have said it. VICTIM 1: Can I then also just ask if you remember that while I was laying on the ground that somebody inserted a metal rod into my anus and shocked me? PERPETRATOR: No, Sir. VICTIM 2: [To perpetrator] Is it not true that you and [?] assaulted me throughout the trip? PERPETRATOR: If you say we assaulted you in the Kombi [minivan], then I would concede in all probability I did. NARRATOR (MOYERS): The victims were often blindfolded during their agony. VICTIM 3: [To perpetrator] I’ve never seen this bag being used myself on any other person… NARRATOR (MOYERS): Now, with the commissioners looking on, they could see, for the first time, exactly how their torturers used techniques like the 'wet bag' to terrorize them. [Shot of perpetrator demonstrating on someone how the wet bag technique was used.] PERPETRATOR: …in that way cutting off the air supply to the person. VICTIM 3: [To perpetrator] What kind of man, that uses a method like this one, of the wet bag, to people—to other human beings—repeatedly, and listening to those moans and cries and groans, and taking each of those people very near to their deaths; what kind of man are you? What kind of man is that?" | |
